Florida Transportation Commission

Focuses on ITS

The Florida Transportation Commission has taken notice of the potential for ITS to save lives, time and money in Florida. Commissioners Norman Mansour and R.M. “Bob” Namoff were selected to assess ITS deployments and needs in Florida. On January 18th, the ITS Office attended a workshop with Commissioners Mansour, Namoff, Lazzara and Durden to discuss the development of the ITS master plans, ITS Program Plan, Statewide ITS Architecture, standards development and TMC software. Following this workshop, Commissioner Namoff met with representatives of District Six to gain a better understanding of ITS services being provided in the Miami-Dade area.

On February 18th, Chester Chandler of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) ITS Office presented an overview of the scope of ITS, potential benefits of ITS and progress the Department has made in implementing the recommendations of the Organizational and Operational Review of the Department of Transportation (also known as the KPMG Report) published by the Commission in January 2001.

Following the presentation, Bob McQueen, President of ITS Florida, provided a brief introduction of that organization and how it supports ITS deployments in Florida.

The Commission provided the following comments during the discussion that followed:

“ITS is clearly important to Florida’s transportation system.”
“How can we help advance the program and get the most bang for the buck?”
“What can we do to advance integrated ITS deployment?”

For further information, please contact Mr. Chester Chandler at the FDOT ITS Office in Tallahassee, (850) 410-5600.

FDOT Plans ITS America Exhibit

The FDOT ITS Office is working on plans for its exhibit at ITS America’s 12th Annual Meeting and Exposition, April 29 to May 2, in Long Beach, California.

"Florida ITS - We're Really Taking Off!" is the theme for the booth which will emphasize the major expansion of Florida's ITS program over the next 10 years and opportunities for public-private partnerships.

"...Our ITS program in Florida is really taking off, with up to $1.5 billion (from all sources) in ITS projects anticipated to come on line over the next 10 years," said Chester Chandler, ITS Office Manager. "We believe it's important for those in the ITS industry to understand our commitment to and excitement about ITS here in Florida."
